Korean goblins, known as dokkaebi, are nature spirits sometimes classified as gods that possess inanimate objects to attain life. They cause both fortune and misfortune to the mortals around them. Some are known as guardians, such as Kim Shin.

Appearance Described as "fearsome" with an intense aura, Kim Shin has a stoic disposition that is often reflected in the stonewall he calls a face.

Personality Kim Shin seems cold and uncaring on the surface, content to push people away and not get involved with them. He has watched countless generations of the Yoo family (his servants and sworn protectors) pass away, one of God's terrible jokes on him for rising as an immortal instrument of vengeance. He would watch all those he loved and loves die and as a result he has grown quite frigid and unwilling to open up. There are times when the ice around his heart can be melted, such as when he saved a young boy in 1968 and a young pregnant woman in 1997. Once someone gets to know him well, he becomes very "push and pull", acting hot and then cold around them as if he doesn't know how to control his emotions.

Abilities Upon being cursed with immortality, Kim Shin becomes a goblin and possesses a number of supernatural powers. While in the drama he has many powers, only a few are used here in the interests of avoiding godmoding.

Telepathy

Used between him and the grim reaper he lives with to talk to each other as well as on mortals to read their thoughts. Sometimes the reaper reads his cheesy thoughts. Not cool.

Weather manipulation

More a side effect of being a goblin rather than an ability or power, when Kim Shin is depressed it begins to rain and when he is angry thunderstorms come down in a localized area around him. When he is happy, cherry blossom flowers bloom even if it is the middle of winter and out of season.

Invisibility/phasing

Invisibility when needed to avoid humans, phasing allows him to go through objects like doors and walls. He can also teleport great distances using his goblin door. He likes Canada this time of year.

Healing

Kim Shin has the ability to heal injuries up to and including fatal ones. He uses this power on Ji Yeon Hee in 1997, saving her life and the life of her unborn child.

History Kim Shin was the greatest general in the Goryeo period of Korea serving a young and jealous king whose mind was poisoned by his advisor.

Origin

Upon returning from a successful military campaign he returns to see the advisor Park Joong Hun poisoning the king's mind against him, saying the people worshipped Kim Shin as the Sun and God (the position the king should occupy in the hearts of his people). Enraged, the king demanded Kim Shin commit suicide or he would murder his family. Kim Sun, sister of Kim Shin, was married to the king and begged her brother to go to him (and kill him, ending his madness). She was the first to die, followed by the rest of their house. At last, Shin asks his most trusted soldier to plunge his blade through his heart, killing him. As he lay dying in a field of buckwheat, he cursed the heavens and god, asking for vengeance. This blade, still buried in his chest, became the object he manifested into. Korean goblins are born when intense emotion such as hatred is imbued into an object. This along with the human blood on Kim Shin's sword buried in his chest helped turn this sword into his goblin object. This sword remains buried in his chest in a spiritual form, only visible to one known as the Goblin Bride who will pull the sword from his chest and end his vengeance and punishment.
